Despite of the all  chaos all over its region for almost half a year, Hongkong was still one of the safest country for migrant workers of any race. There are 390,000 foreign workers in Hongkong 213,000  of which was Filipinos. Majority of migrant workers was Filipino domestic helpers.

But why does they prefer to land a job on a  foreign land?  Why does majority of it was Filipinos? And how are this migrant workers live their lives?

What was  the reason why a lot of people decided to migrate. One of the major reason was financial stability. To earn higher, to be able sustain all their family needs.

Why does majority of the migrant workers was Filipinos?, Especially here in HK .Why? Because we Filipinos are hardworking and dedicated on any job we're in. Its our traits that attracts foreign employers.

But on top of this how do migrant workers live their lives in a distant land, away from their home, away from their families. How to cope on a different environment.

I  want to elaborate here some phases of a domestic helper's emotional adjustments. Its how we overcome the longing for our family.

The best word to accompany FDH was "SACRIFICE".

From the very beginning of our journey as domestic helper up to its very end sacrifices was overflowing.

"Leaving our loved ones"

This was the hardest part. The mere fact that  we have to work on distant place, unable to interact personally with our family, this was the most frightening. Although nowadays social media platforms was prevalent, we can always connect with them, still it was not that comforting.

"Entering a whole new world"

The very moment the plane takes off  the fear starts to surround our whole body. The fear of  the unknown, the feeling of uncertainty. We're about to enter a life we never had imagined.  People we have to  serve, costume and traditions we must abide, and work load already in line. " It's a world yet unfold".

"Adjustment and Homesick"

The very moment we meet our employer, fear overpower us. The first meeting was the hardest, we're like solving a math problem. You're calculating,  observing and adjusting. Then homesick infiltrates in, the feeling of wanting to have someone beside you. Its making you sick, and the desire to go home was so strong. Everything was so depressing, but you have to surmount all of it.

"Comfortable"

Its the phase wherein your goal was your strongest motivation. You already overcome the feeling of wanting to go home. Our work was easier and our relationship with employer becomes warmer. Like a math problem, coz we already familiarized the solution we can easily get the answer. Maybe not all the time we get it right, but at least we are learning and we have already its pattern.

We already calculated our work,

We become observant,

And we already make the necessary adjustments.

So our journey here abroad was a bit comfortable than before.

Being migrant worker is not as easy nor as complicated as it looks. It’s not that easy as we are experiencing different levels of emotional phase. But it’s neither that complicated because it all depends on you; it depends how you handle it.

You're painting your whole journey

       So paint it well...

             Paint it well pangyao..😊😊
