Overview

Meet Julia, founder of Junels. In 1984, Julia came to Hong Kong from Quezon City to work She married her husband Alvin in 1995 and went on to spend 14 years working in hospitality, from Wan Chai institution Joe Bananas to The Four Seasons Spa. Then, her landlord of many years encouraged her to start her own business (and rent the long-empty retail space he owned on the ground floor). She decided to open a karaoke restobar, having noted the many Filipino karaoke bars on the Island that were often packed, yet unlicensed and somewhat seedy. She took a brave step by pushing through and turning it into a bar in 2009. It’s also a cornerstone of Hong Kong’s Filipino community—a place where all generations of a family will celebrate their birthdays. For the city’s domestic helpers, it’s a place where they can gather comfortably and safely on Sundays to sing and to enjoy their native cuisine.
